flowers + reading

Today’s post is a bit indulgent of me. I hope you don’t mind. As I pore over hundreds of images each week, I enjoy seeing the incredible work of the most talented and passionate floral designers the world over. I can’t imagine there being a better career. Heck, I can’t even believe this is a career! Occasionally, I happen across an artist’s work that touches me in a way I can’t explain. The photography of Alice Gao falls into that category and I want to start off the new week by sharing some of her images with you.
Alice’s ability to capture beauty in simplicity reminds me to breath. To appreciate the shapes and colors of a few blooms. To notice how they fit into their surroundings and help beautify our day-to-day lives in addition to the special occasions we are so often focused on as florists.
Just for a moment, I can rest my mind while looking at an Alice Gao still life. And remember the importance of taking a break from the fast-paced world we live in…imagining a quiet mid-morning coffee break in the company of a friend or a relaxed stroll through the garden breathing in the fresh air.
I bet many of you can relate…after a day (or week or month!) of planning, buying, stressing over lost or damaged shipments, conditioning, designing, delivering…what a treat it is to casually stroll through our personal garden, choose a few favorite blooms, and drop them into a special bottle or heirloom vase. No expectations. No critiques. No fuss. Just a simple pleasure enjoyed in a quiet moment. Alice’s images remind me to take those moments for myself and for my family.
As you go about your week, I hope you’ll carve out a few moments of reprieve from your hectic schedule to enjoy the beauty in the simplest blooms. And I hope it helps recharge and inspire you for the amazing art you create. Have a great week! xo
